VTT to SRT Converter for Editors and Players

You downloaded captions from a web player and your editing software will not touch a .vtt file. Convert it to SRT in the browser and carry on working.

What the converter does

WebVTT Captions Your Editor Will Actually Open

SRT remains the lingua franca of subtitle tools, video editors and broadcast workflows. Getting back to it from WebVTT should take one click.

Local Processing

The file is read and rewritten inside the page. It is never sent to the Bubixo server.

No Waiting

Conversion is immediate, however many cues the file contains.

Proper Numbering

SRT requires a sequence number before every cue, and the converter writes them for you.

Exact Timings

Start and end times are carried over unchanged, only reformatted for SubRip.

Header Cleaned Up

WebVTT-only elements such as the file header are removed so the SRT stays valid.

Download as .srt

The finished file downloads with the extension editors and players expect.

How it works

From .vtt to .srt in Three Steps

Everything happens locally, so the size of your connection makes no difference.

1

Choose Your VTT

Drop a .vtt file onto the page or pick it from your device.

2

Convert

Press convert and the page rewrites the cues in SubRip syntax.

3

Download the SRT

Save the .srt file and open it in your editor, player or subtitle tool.

Supported files

WebVTT In, SubRip Out

A single, predictable conversion with no options to configure.

VTT

WebVTT Input

Caption tracks exported from browsers, web players and online video platforms.

SRT

SubRip Output

The numbered subtitle format that video editors, media players and most services accept.

Only the subtitle file is needed; the video is irrelevant to the conversion. Cue positioning and styling that exist only in WebVTT cannot be represented in SRT and are dropped.

Use cases

Bringing Web Captions Back into Production

Anything that leaves a browser tends to arrive as WebVTT, and almost everything else wants SRT.

Video Editing

Import captions into an editor that only reads SRT subtitle files.

Media Players

Place a .srt next to a video file so a desktop player picks it up automatically.

Translation Workflows

Feed the captions into a subtitle translator that expects SubRip input.

Archiving

Keep transcripts in the plainest, most portable subtitle format available.

Privacy and responsible use

Captions Are a Transcript, So Treat Them Carefully

A caption file contains every word spoken in the recording. That is often more sensitive than the video itself.

  • The file is converted in your browser and is not uploaded to the Bubixo server.
  • No copy is kept, because no copy is ever made outside your device.
  • Convert only captions you own or are authorised to handle.
  • Review the result before sharing it, especially for recordings of other people.
  • Styling and positioning that only WebVTT supports will not survive the conversion.

⚠ Good to know

What SRT Cannot Carry Over

SubRip is deliberately simple: sequence number, timestamps, text. Cue identifiers, region definitions, alignment and positioning settings that WebVTT allows have no SRT equivalent and are left behind. For plain dialogue captions, which is the vast majority of files, nothing of substance is lost.

The converter changes format only. It does not translate, re-time, merge or split cues, and it cannot fix a WebVTT file that was already malformed before conversion.

Frequently asked questions

VTT to SRT FAQ

Why would I convert VTT to SRT?

Most video editors, desktop players and subtitle services expect SubRip files, while browsers and web players export WebVTT.

Is the file uploaded to a server?

No. Conversion runs inside your browser and the subtitle file stays on your device.

Do the timings stay the same?

Yes. Only the timestamp formatting changes, from periods to commas, and cue numbers are added.

What happens to WebVTT styling?

Positioning and styling settings have no SubRip equivalent, so they are dropped. The dialogue and timings are kept.

Is there a limit on file size?

The tool is free and handles ordinary caption files, which are small text documents.

Can I go the other way?

Yes, the companion SRT to VTT converter does the reverse.
