How to Count Words and Characters Online

Short answer: open the counter, type or paste your text, and read the six figures that update with every keystroke. There is no button to press and no result to wait for.

Six numbers, and why they differ

Most people discover the distinctions the hard way, when a form rejects text that "should" have fitted:

  • Words — what essays, articles and most editorial briefs are measured in.
  • Characters — including spaces. This is what most social platforms and form fields count.
  • Characters without spaces — what many translation and typesetting quotes use, and the reason a translator's count never matches yours.
  • Sentences — a quick readability signal; long average sentences are hard to read.
  • Paragraphs — useful when a structure is prescribed for you.
  • Reading time — an estimate in minutes, the figure blogs and presentations usually care about.

A meta description limit of 160 characters and an abstract limit of 160 words are wildly different constraints. Checking the right counter is the whole point.

Step by step

  1. Open the counter. Go to the word and character counter. The page loads with an empty text area and all counters at zero.
  2. Type or paste. Write directly in the box, or paste text in from a document, an e-mail, a form or a web page. Every counter updates immediately.
  3. Edit until it fits. Trim or expand while watching the one figure you care about, then clear the box when you move to the next text so counts never carry over.

A realistic example

You are writing a conference abstract with a 250-word ceiling and a 1,500-character ceiling — two limits at once, which is common and annoying. Pasting the draft in shows both numbers together, so you can see straight away that you are 12 words under but 40 characters over, and that the fix is shorter words rather than fewer sentences.

Common limits worth knowing

  • SEO title: roughly 60 characters before search results truncate it.
  • Meta description: roughly 155–160 characters.
  • Academic abstract: commonly 150–300 words, set by the venue.
  • CV bullet: one to two lines; if it wraps to three, it is too long.

Why two tools disagree about your word count

It is normal for a word processor, a form and this counter to report slightly different numbers for the same text, and the differences are not errors. Counters disagree about:

  • Hyphenated words. Is state-of-the-art one word or four?
  • Numbers and symbols. Some counters skip standalone figures and currency symbols entirely.
  • Headings, captions and footnotes. A word processor counting a whole document includes material an editor's limit was never meant to cover.
  • Line breaks pasted from a PDF. A word split across a line break can be counted as two.

When a hard limit is being enforced by someone else, the count that matters is the one their system produces. Leave yourself a small margin rather than landing exactly on the number.

One limitation

There is no file upload — this is a text box, not a document analyser. To count the words in a PDF or Word file, copy the text out of it and paste it in.

Frequently asked questions

Is my text uploaded to a server?

No. The analysis runs in your browser and your text is not uploaded.

Can I count the words in a PDF or Word file?

Not directly. Copy the text out of the file and paste it into the box.

Does it count characters with or without spaces?

Both are shown at the same time, along with words, sentences, paragraphs and estimated reading time.

What languages is the interface available in?

English, Turkish, German, Spanish and French.

How is reading time estimated?

It is an estimate in minutes derived from the length of the text, intended as a guide for blog posts and presentations rather than a precise measurement.

A note on sensitive text

Because the counting happens in the page itself, your text is not sent anywhere. Even so, treat any shared or public computer with the usual caution when pasting confidential material into a browser.
