What the tool does

Every Limit You Have to Write Inside

Meta descriptions, tweets, abstracts, essays and application forms all come with a number attached, and each of them counts something slightly different.

Six Counts at Once

Words, characters, characters without spaces, sentences, paragraphs and reading time, all visible together.

Live Updates

Numbers change with every keystroke, so you can trim a sentence and watch it fit.

Type or Paste

Write directly in the box or paste text in from a document, an e-mail or a form.

Reading Time

An estimate in minutes, which is the figure blogs and presentations usually care about.

Nothing Leaves the Page

The analysis runs in your browser; your text is not uploaded to a server.

Five Interface Languages

The tool is available in English, Turkish, German, Spanish and French.

How it works

There Is Barely a Process

No button to press and no result to wait for.

1

Open the Counter

The page loads with an empty text area and all counters at zero.

2

Type or Paste

Write your text or paste it in. Every counter updates immediately.

3

Edit Until It Fits

Trim or expand the text while watching the figure you care about, then clear the box when you are done.

What you can count

Plain Text of Any Length

The tool works with the text itself, not with files.

TYPE

Typed Text

Draft directly in the page while keeping an eye on the limit you are writing towards.

PASTE

Pasted Text

Bring in text from a document, e-mail, form or web page to measure it.

CLEAR

One-Click Reset

Clear the box between texts so counts never carry over from the previous one.

There is no file upload: this is a text box, not a document analyser. To count the words in a PDF or Word file, copy the text out of it and paste it here.

Use cases

Writing to a Number

Somebody almost always set a limit before you started writing.

SEO Text

Keep a page title or meta description inside the length search engines will actually display.

Essays and Assignments

Hit a word count without pasting into a word processor to check.

Social Posts

Fit a post into a character limit before you publish it.

Articles and Blogs

Use the reading time estimate to judge whether an article is the right length.

Privacy and responsible use

Your Text Is Analysed Where You Typed It

Drafts are often confidential long before they are published, which is why counting them should not require sending them anywhere.

  • The text is analysed in your browser and is not uploaded to any server.
  • Nothing is stored: closing or clearing the page removes the text.
  • Safe to use for unpublished drafts, internal documents and client work.
  • Reading time is an estimate based on average reading speed, not a measurement of your specific audience.
  • Counting rules differ between tools, so check which definition the recipient of your text uses.

⚠ Good to know

Counts Are Conventions, Not Absolutes

Different software counts differently. A hyphenated compound may be one word here and two elsewhere, and some tools ignore numbers or punctuation entirely. When a hard limit matters, such as an application form, verify against the system that will actually enforce it.

Sentence and paragraph counts rely on ordinary punctuation and line breaks. Abbreviations with full stops, bullet lists and text pasted without paragraph breaks can shift those two figures, while word and character counts stay reliable.

Frequently asked questions

Word and Character Counter FAQ

What exactly does it count?

Words, characters, characters without spaces, sentences, paragraphs and an estimated reading time in minutes.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. The text is analysed directly in your browser and is not sent to a server.

Do I have to press a button?

No. All figures update automatically as you type or paste.

Can I count the words in a PDF or Word file?

Not directly. Copy the text out of the document and paste it into the counter.

How is reading time calculated?

From the word count using an average reading speed, so treat it as an estimate rather than a precise figure.

Is there a length limit?

No fixed limit. Very long texts depend on your browser, but ordinary articles and essays pose no problem.
